Biography
Lorna Baez is a Faculty, student adviser, and the Senior Independent Study Coordinator at the Costa Rica Center of LIU Global. She currently teaches the Latin American Studies, Field Work Methods for Independent Study, Junior Research and the Online Senior Independent Study Seminars as well as coordinates the Senior Projects. Lorna has been working at LIU Global for the past four years. During this time she has served as Admissions Counselor, Academic Assistant, Student Success Coordinator, Living Latin American Studies Coordinator, Faculty adviser and Seminar Coordinator. She has also organized the one week Service Learning as well as the two-week Independent Study projects at the Costa Rica Center. Her love for the arts drove her to initiate and coordinate the now much anticipated Festival del Sur, an end-of-the-year artistic performance by students and faculty members at a black-box theater at the National University of Costa Rica. Lorna has been an active member in committees at the local and global level and now anticipates her new roles to guide Junior and Senior students to organize, develop and lead their Independent Study Projects.
A Cuban-Puerto Rican raised in the Dominican Republic, she moved to the United States were she pursued a bachelor's degree at Florida State University in International Affairs on a Fulbright Scholarship concentrating her studies in Latin American history, political science, and Women's Studies. As an undergraduate she worked for Dr. Rodney Anderson in the Guadalajara Census Project assisting in the creation of a database from an entire census for the Mexican city of Guadalajara. After graduating, she moved to Costa Rica were she has lived for ten years. She completed her PhD in Latin American Studies under the Philosophy Department of the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica. Her thesis examined the perspectives of interviewed sex workers inside the sexual tourism industry in the town of Jacó, Costa Rica, analyzing Jean Baudrillard's postmodern theories on seduction and simulation. Lorna’s academic interests include women and gender studies, migration studies, postmodernism, and Latin American thought. She is also an avid dancer, intrigued by folklore and afro-based beats.
