Dr Geoff O’Brien is concerned about global problems but is committed to an evidence-led policy change environment; he is actively involved in public life. Geoff has served as Sheriff and Deputy Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne for municipal year 2010/11 and as Lord Mayor for the municipal year 2011/2012. He has been involved in a number of initiatives aimed at promoting more sustainable approaches across the city and enhancing the lives of the most vulnerable in our society.
Geoff is also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography, Northumbria University. He combines engineering practice with social science work on policy and practice in sustainable development, disaster management and humanitarian assistance. Prior to joining Northumbria University, Geoff was involved in the geophysical industry with a global remit and a particular focus on environmental responsibility. He co-authored a book on future energy policy that was published in 2010. He has also published a number of peer reviewed articles as well as conference papers. He has a PhD in Disaster Management, Climate Change and Variability and Social Resilience.
