Over the last decade China has become increasingly recognized as a major contributor to global scientific innovation and knowledge production. However, the impact of Chinese science – as captured by the total number of citations to these research articles - has increased dramatically slower. This study attempted to understand the forces contributing to this phenomenon. We found gap between the number of citations to China’s articles and to other countries’ articles. Our findings uncovered a potential inefficiency in global knowledge exchange and accumulation. In science, leading countries/territories over the world did not stand on China’s shoulders, although China contributed the second largest number of knowledge to the world of science.
