Visiting Yiwu's Commodity Market, situated in Zhejiang Province, China, is an experience like no other. The moment you step into this sprawling market, you are instantly swept up in a whirlwind of vibrancy and activity. The sheer scale of the market, often referred to as the world's largest small commodities market, is overwhelming, with countless stalls stretching as far as the eye can see.

The market pulsates with energy, filled with traders from all corners of the globe, haggling over prices and finalizing deals. The air is filled with a cacophony of languages, reflecting Yiwu's role as a global trading hub. The rows of stalls, stacked high with an astonishing variety of goods, from toys and stationery to jewelry and household items, form a maze of colors and textures. Despite the hustle and bustle, the market operates with an underlying order, a testament to the traders' professionalism and the market's efficient organization.

Visiting Yiwu's Commodity Market is not just a shopping trip, but an immersion into a thrilling, dynamic world of commerce and culture. The experience leaves you with a sense of awe for the city's entrepreneurial spirit, and a deeper understanding of the global interconnectedness of trade.

The trip that we went on Sunday was not only educational but also eye-opening, as it provided us with insights into Huayuan County’s ambitious rebuilding program and showcased the well-organized nature of the visit.

Our primary destination in Yiwu was the International Trade Commodities Market, which is often referred to as the “World's Supermarket.” It's a massive complex that houses a staggering variety of goods, from textiles and fashion accessories to electronics and home décor. The market covers an extensive area and is divided into different sections for various product categories. This experience exposed us to the intricacies of international trade, the importance of global supply chains, and the diversity of products that are available in the global market.

One of the most significant highlights of the trip was learning about Huayuan’s ambitious rebuilding program. This initiative involves county development, infrastructure enhancement, and promoting green practices. We had the privilege of touring some of the newly constructed and renovated areas, and it was evident that the city was taking significant steps toward its goals.

We finished our trip by visiting the furniture factory. The factory showcased the impressive craftsmanship and quality of the furniture produced. The factory’s commitment to using eco-friendly materials and minimizing waste was particularly impressive and served as an example of the county's responsible approach to industrial development.

The overall organization of our school trip was outstanding. The school administration and our tour guides ensured that every aspect of the trip was well-planned and executed flawlessly. I would love to express my gratitude for everyone who made this trip happen, and hope we can have more in the future.

Our first stop was at Yiwu commodity market (the largest small commodity market in the world). Yiwu community epitomizes an incredible transformation from one of the poorest counties, to the richest modern City in China, within 40 years.

The Garden Village and the Dongyang Mingtang Redwood Furniture, also showed respectively, admirable trajectories of sustainable growth and self sufficiency for industry and economy.

Our trip to Jinhua Prefecture in Zhejiang Province was a massive learning experience as we felt for ourselves firsthand, the experience of an area that boasts of significant achievements admired by the whole of China and the World at large.

I’m writing regarding my trip to Yiwu yesterday. Talking about the first session's Yiwu international commodity market, I was very impressed by the story about Yiwu, mostly about its technology and future technology. I had the chance to talk to one of the sellers; he told me how cheap the products could be if one were to buy them in bulk, and they gave me a deep impression and made me think of establishing my own store in Rwanda right after I finish my studies.

Besides that, it was also a big pleasure visiting the garden village, and I was very impressed by the agriculture system there. I used to ask myself why China can never have a food shortage, and I hope that from yesterday’s trip, I managed to answer my questions. Moreover, learning about the local government was also helpful. As a student majoring in leadership-related courses, it was a good chance.

Last but not least, I would like to talk about the visit to Dongyang Mingtang. Redwood Furniture Co., Ltd. Well, it wasn’t my first time to see such companies, but it was my first time to see such a company with such impressive technology. They understand customers needs and consider them first. They have unique ways and a system to introduce new products, and this is what makes them competitive on the market. They never forget about research, which enables them to think of new products, and still, this is what allows them to be able to compete on the market. They have different teams for different tasks, and this, I guess, makes their job much easier.

The trip left me with a good feeling, and I hope to learn more from future trips.

I really enjoyed the trip to Yiwu with everyone else from our department. It was unexpected since I had no idea where we were going to visit so the trip was quite interesting. Yiwu’s development story is impressive and it could be a good lesson for other city or village to follow. What I like the most from the trip is to see the gardening area of different type of fruits and vegetables. I also had a good time at the furniture showroom, the owner was really enthusiastic in explaining us how he built his company, especially the showcase of different kind of furnitures used for top meetings hosted by China in the past. Last not least, big thanks to you for making sure we ate well and safe and the big dinner hosted by the furniture was also the best part.

 ——Monirath

First of all, I would like to thank those who organized the trip for us. I could see that the preparation for the trip was perfect, and every place we visited welcomed us warmly.

I could see how a small village can be transformed into a charming and eye-catching ‘town’ and driving through green flowery fields and seeing the growing fruit in the trees and trying freshly picked fruit from the greenhouses were so worth experiencing. Furthermore, the experience of visiting a luxurious and real wood-quality furniture factory and seeing and touching those amazingly well-made chairs for world-level events, such as the G20 summit chair and for The Hangzhou Asian Games in its exhibition house was really eye-opening.

 ——Muugi

The excursion to Yiwu was remarkable in several ways. Besides the equally interesting agenda items of the commodity market and the garden village, the botanical garden and the furniture fabric caught particularly my attention. The modernity, and the therefore resulting effeciency of cultivation, was new to me and enabled an insight of potential agricultural production in the 21st century. As a contrast, the manifactured furnitures of the Dongyang Mingtang Redwood Furniture demonstrated that even a traditional form of production brings with a uniqueness which requires a creativity and sensitivity, not yet achieved by machines, and thus is worth to be preserved. I can highly recommend to undertake this excursion again in the following years.

The day trip to Yi Wu City in Zhejiang Province took place on the 15th of October, 2023. The transportation was comfortable and the driver was friendly and trustworthy. I have been previously to Yi Wu city; however, each time I visit, I am more and more amazed by its fast and steady economic and social development.  Also, I was not expecting such a nice and delicious lunch for free!

The thing that made me the most amazed was our visit to Hua Yuan Cun. At first, I thought it is a mere village and was prepared to see some rural life. However, I was astonished to find it is actually a modern-day, sustainable area with citizens who actively engage in life and development. I was enchanted by the story of the village and the results it accomplished. It made me think about my hometown in my country, which desperately needs the same development program. I felt sad that my country’s government is not paying enough to the problems of development and at the same time I felt very proud of what the Chinese people have accomplished for their future. Hua Yuan Cun citizens and all Chinese people should be proud and happy!

After visiting the gardens and eating the most amazing vegetables and fruits I have ever eaten in China, we went to a Wooden factory that makes traditional, extremely high-quality furniture. I was astonished by the quality and the hard work everybody put into the making process. The factory’s manager was extremely patient and showed us everything. The fancy dinner was more than I hoped for and I could try the best high-quality food in Zhejiang Province!

I am so grateful for the hard efforts of the teachers and the other Chinese students for offering this beautiful, educational, and fun activity. Thank you so, so much! You left an unforgettable good memory in my heart and I can’t wait to share with my family and friends!
