The field survey to Nanjing and Suzhou was a highly informative and meaningful experience for me. At the Nanjing Museum, the diverse permanent and temporary exhibitions, including those focused on traditional Chinese colors, lacquerware and the War of Resistance deepened my appreciation for China’s cultural heritage and historical memory. The visit to the Memorial Hall of the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders was emotionally impactful and once again reminded me of the importance of remembering history in order to cherish peace and work toward a better future. In Suzhou, seeing the impressive scale of urban development at the City Planning Exhibition Hall left me in awe, demonstrating both China’s rapid modernization and its commitment to preserving cultural identity. Overall, the trip broadened my understanding of the connections between historical memory, cultural traditions, and contemporary urban development in China. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn outside the classroom in addition to the normal curriculum and I am looking forward to the next field survey.

The trip we took to Nanjing and Suzhou this past weekend was a historically and culturally enriching trip for me. It was a well thought out plan that balanced historical learning alongside cultural experiences. We got to deepen our historical knowledge at places such as the Nanjing Museum, the Nanjing Massacre Memorial and the Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum, and the Suzhou City Planning Museum. Culturally enriching experiences also presented itself throughout the trip in the local cuisine we sampled, admiring the traditional attires people dressed up in, appreciating the well-preserved ancient architecture, as well as enjoying the sounds of different traditional Chinese instruments.
The most memorable site for me was the Nanjing Massacre Memorial due to the deep emotional impact it had on me. Before even entering the memorial, I already had tears in my eyes from seeing the statues by the entrance and learning about the horrors that occurred during the massacre only made me despair at the total lack of humanity in this atrocious event in history. However, as we finished up at the memorial, there was a beautiful sunset that bathed the statue of Peace in soft golden tones. It made me reflect about how despite these dark days in history, there is still hope as these events serve as reminders for humanity to never repeat this.
Overall, I gained a lot during this trip and I’m very grateful for the efforts put in to organize it. I also look forward to participating in more trips in the future.

The three-day field trip to Suzhou and Nanjing was both educational and emotionally impactful. In Suzhou, we explored the city’s infrastructure and cultural heritage, gaining insights into its urban development and preservation of traditional elements. The city’s calm and aesthetic environment left a strong impression on me. In contrast, Nanjing appeared far more dynamic and fast-paced compared to Hangzhou. Visiting the Nanjing Memorial Hall was a deeply moving experience; I felt a strong emotional response while learning about the tragic events of 1937 caused by the Japanese invasion. The sorrow and sense of loss I felt reminded me of the Khojaly genocide, creating a personal connection to the historical suffering. Despite the limited time in Nanjing, the overall trip was enriching and well-organized. Additionally, I greatly enjoyed tasting a variety of Chinese dishes throughout the journey. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to participate in this memorable field trip.

The field trip we embarked on wasn't just a normal trip for me, as I came to the realisation that exposure is a prerequisite needed for cognitive and physical growth, and also changes the perspective of how one views the world. The beauty of the roads from Hangzhou to Nanjing made it effortlessly safe to travel. Seeing how Chinese people invest in their history preservation, showed how the nation is rooted in teaching and showing it's history to the future generations through state of the art preservation eg the projectors and the VR which showed the history of China at Nanjing museum. Learning of history makes us understand the past, our visit at the Nanjing massacre museum made me learn about the Japanese invasion of China and the atrocities it committed to the Chinese people, and how that led to national movements, also the architectural designs made at the Nanjing massacre museum are just too beautiful to ignore. The journey up to the Sun Yat- sen mausoleum was a physical exercise on its own. The mausoleum made me wonder how the Chinese people were civilised in the early 20th century such that they build such an intricate thing up a mountain and it still exists till date.
Suzhou, it is a city of happiness indeed. The night life is just wonderful from the lights to the skycrappers which at night will be glowing, the business of the metro train even at late night it was just a nice experience and also the water display which occurred at night in front of the Suzhou Plaza Mall. The Suzhou Urban Planning Center enlightened us on the history of the city and how it runs it's economy and also they showed us the replica of the city which showed the amount of investment made by the government in urbanising the city and also service delivery. Therefore the exposure I experienced on this 3 day trip made me want to learn more such that I can take the brilliant ideas and lessons back home and develop Zimbabwe.

This weekend journey allowed us to know two different perspectives of Chinese history: resistance and governance. The visit to Nanjing and its museums showed us the hard steps that the country has given in order to reach to the point where it is today. All of these positive and though moments have contributed to the Chinese highly rich culture, art, social, economical and political organization that we see nowadays.
Having the opportunity of visiting Memorial Hall in commemoration to the victims of the Nanjing Massacre was especially incredible and sensitive. The main hall where the faces of the victims (I cannot be sure if all of them, but it seems like) is a strong message to Chinese people and to the rest of the world about the importance of memories. Victims are not just a number, they were people, with love beings, with dreams, and looking at their faces and their names is an excellent way to say “we don’t forget you and we will never do”.
My final words are dedicated to Suzhou city, which has been the most beautiful place I have been to in the few months since I arrived to China.

Our group trip to Nanjing and Suzhou was amazing. in Nanjing, we saw many old treasures at the museum. The Massacre Memorial was very sad but important to see. we also climed the big stairs at the Sun Yat-Sen mausoleum. In Suzhou, we saw the modern city plans. then we visited the old street by canal, which was very beautiful. at night, the water and light show at the lake was a fantastic end to our day. We captured countless good pictures, from solemn reflections at the memorial to joyful group shots. this journey was not just a tour but a deeply enriching cultural immersion i would highly recommend.
