Short Bio

Yongdong Shen is a research fellow at School of Public Affairs, Zhejiang University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Oslo and a visiting scholar at University of Boston. His PhD thesis titled “The Strategic Interaction of Business Associations and Government in a Changing China” examines and analyzes how local business associations participate in the process of policy decision-making and policy implementation. His articles publish in Journals such as China Quarterly, China: An International Journal, The China Review: An Interdisciplinary Journal on Greater China and Journal of Chinese Political Science.

Currently, Yongdong Shen is interested in two topics: NGOs development in China and local goverments’ environmental policy enforcement. Against the background of rapid economic transitions and social changes, the shifting role and strategies of Chinese local governments and NGOs emerges. In the study of NGOs development in China, he sees how the emerging NGOs-local governments collabrations operate and reshape the relationship of state and society in China. In the course of China’s recently enfored air pollution control policies, he sees new forms of environmental governance emerging and endeavours to study how different parties, cleavages and conflicts re-shape the involved interactions of local governments and the public. In particular, he focuses on the local implementation of industry-related air policy at the city level in China.
