The interface between trade and environmental regime complexes

Abstract:

Trade agreements increasingly include ambitious environmental provisions, creating an emerging trade/environment regime complex. Despite the encompassing nature of these provisions, studies on their drivers and consequences remain scarce. Until recently, the main factor hindering research in this area was the lack of reliable data. This presentation will discuss insights from a new dataset, the TRade & ENvironmental Database (TREND), which documents 280 types of environmental provisions in 720 trade agreements signed between 1947 and 2018. The presentation will discuss the drivers of this trade and environment regime complex, including why and how certain countries insist to include environmental provisions in their trade agreements.  It will also present findings on the effects of these provisions on trade flows and domestic environmental regulations.
