The Department of Political Science was created as part of Hangzhou University in 1952. Since the founding of the new Zhejiang University on the basis of the amalgamation of the four former individual universities, namely Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University, in September 1998, the department is taking full advantage of the opportunities brought by the amalgamation to improve conditions for teaching and research, invite academic staff committed to high-quality research and teaching to join the Department. The Department has about 11 full-time faculty members. The Department has developed into a respected teaching and research institution that has gained both national and international recognition.


Teaching

The Department aims to produce knowledgeable, broad-minded, and sophisticated students who can examine both national and international political issues objectively, critically, and from different perspectives. The Department offers modules in political thought histories, international politics and relations, political theory, China’s Politics and government, public policy, political methodology, and public administration. The Department offers graduate degrees, i.e. Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D of Political Science with two bachelor programs (political science and Administration, International politics), four master programs (Political Theory, China and Foreign Political Institutions, International Relation, and CCP History), and two doctoral programs (Political Theory, Social Management). The graduate programs is particularly strong in the areas of local politics and governance in Zhejiang .

 

Research

Academic staff members in the Department have wide-ranging interests across the major fields of specialization. The Department is particularly strong in the study of local politics and governance in Zhejiang. Staff members have published books, in both regional and international journals. In addition, many provide consultancy to the public organizations. The Department has also been active in organizing conferences, forums, seminars, and workshops, some of which were jointly organized with foreign institutions.

 

Career Prospects

Graduates from the Department of Political Science have good career opportunities both in the public sector, universities and academic institutes. Several government department have traditionally been very interested in recruiting graduates from the Department. Political Science graduates can also be found in banks and corporations.

The Department has been active in organizing conferences, forums, seminars, and workshops, some of which were jointly organized with foreign institutions. The Department is closely associated with East Asian Institute and department of Political Science of National University of Singapore, Department of Political Science of Boston University, School of Politics and International Relations of Deakin University of Australia, China Policy Institute of Nottingham University, East South Asian Institute of Lund University, The London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Leuven, Waseda University, and The College of International Relations of Warsaw University.
